Girl (image sketch)

Hello peoples.  Sorry I haven't posted anything as of late, but school's started up again and my life has become rather hectic. :P

This is just a quick sketch of some random girl. . . .I thought I should post something (it's been almost 20 days after all.)  Anyways, I got to use a lot of patterns which was pretty fun, but her skin tone could use some work.

Peace out peoplz!

The Adventures of Chibi Sesshomaru (comic)

More Chibi Sesshomaru!  :D  I just had so much fun with the study that I decided to do this.

Kagome decides to teach Sesshy how to properly use eating utensils, but he gets a little sensitive about his missing arm. . .poor table.

1st Panel -- Kagome:  So you take the knife in your right hand, see?
2nd Panel -- (Sesshy stabs the table with his knife)
3rd Panel -- Kagome:  No, no, like THIS. (No change)
4th Panel -- Kagome:  Uh. . . yeah.
5th Panel:  Onto the fork!  It's much simpler.  You hold it in your left hand, like so --
6th Panel:  CREEAAK!
7th Panel:  ?
8th Panel:  !
9th Panel:  SLAM!

*NOTE*  This comic takes place in the modern world, as will all subsequent comics of this nature if I decide to produce them. ;)

Chibi Sesshomaru Study (image study)

This is my first attempt at chibi, and, seeing as it is a first attempt, I think it turned out pretty well.  I chose Sesshomaru as my subject because: 1) I think he's extremely awesome -.-, and 2) he has fun, flouncy clothes.  :)  His wardrobe is easily adaptable to a simple chibi form, though the detailing required to make a  more realistic image of him would take far too long for my short attention-span.

This took me about 40 minutes tops, simply due to the time spent making sure that I got the basics of his clothes right.

My personal favorite is the lower-center face.  Poor Sesshy-san. . . .he just looks so disturbed that its hilarious. >:)

Peace out, peoplz!

Itachi Study (image study)

Another Akatsuki study.  I just found these to be fun, quick posts.  :)  This particular one took me about 40 minutes.  I think I'll do Kisame or Hidan next, but I haven't decided yet.

Peace out, peoplz!

Sasori Study (image study)

Here's another Akatsuki study, this one for Sasori.  My last post contained one of Deidara, so I thought I might as well do another for his partner. :)  I probably spent about 50 minutes on this one, mostly on the hands and facial structure.  Hope it doesn't look too bad!

Peace out!

Deidara Study (image study)

Quick Deidara study.  Probably spent a half an hour on it, but I wasn't keeping track. ;)  I just felt the need to post something.

As you may have noticed, I changed the Kobalt Board's layout.  I'm rather proud of it, and I think it's much easier to read.  The black background and white text was just too much on the eyes.

Anyways, hope you like this terribly random sketch!

Peace out, peoplz!

Grab My Meme (image)

Hello, peoplz!  Figured I should post something more upbeat, resulting in this! :D  For those of you who don't know, Kyo is my OC from my story Gift of the Outcast, and Shichirou is her personal summon.

Deidara was a little bit out of it in the morning, so Kyo decided to have a some fun.  But you can't blame him!  Shichirou's tail really does look like a black. . . .twitching. . . .vine. :/   Okay, so maybe Dei was really out of it.

Anyways, hope you like it! :)

Kyo vs. the Spandex (Gift of the Outcast Comic)

*click for larger size (I recommend this)*

Okay, I just HAD to do this.  In case you're wondering, this is a scene from my story, the Gift of the Outcast.  Specifically, it's from Chapter 5 (link: http://kobalt-board.blogspot.com/2011/01/gift-of-outcast-chapter-5-story.html) where Kyo defeats the evil known as SPANDEX *shudders.*  In case you're wondering, green spandex is the mark of Rock Lee and Maito Gai, two rather eccentric shinobi of Konoha.

Poor Deidara-kun looks rather disturbed.  XD.

It should be noted that this is a quick half-hour comic, hence the terrible quality.  I was really bored. . . . And I'm almost done with Gift of the Outcast Chapter 6, so I'll be posting it either tonight or tomorrow.

Peace out peoplz!

Setsuko (fanfiction image)

Okay, I FINALLY got something posted.  I've been rather inactive, except for putting the finishing touches on Chapter 6 of Gift of the Outcast.  (It will be out soon, I promise!)

Anyway, this is a character in a new story I have been brainstorming.  And don't worry, even if I start publishing this new story, I will forge on in my other projects!  Now, before I introduce you specifically to this character, I believe that a little background info on the story itself is necessary.  Basically, it is a Naruto fanfiction set in the present day, after all the events in the actual canon.  The plot revolves around the fact that, at some point in shinobi history (don't want to reveal any spoilers, so I will be purposefully vague) part of the shinobi population's chakra was sealed, reducing them greatly in power.  This in turn forced into hiding.  In the present day, an underground of shinobi is the only remnant of their once great civilization.  The legends of the ancient masters have faded into wives-tales.
However, a select few are dedicated to reviving the ancient powers, so as the shinobi can once again rule over the world:  the Akatsuki.

*NOTE:  This (possible) story will contain a completely new set of Akatsuki and Jinchuuriki alike.  Though, there will be some connections to canon characters, such as Uzumaki Naruto himself as well as the original Akatsuki.*

The woman pictured here is named Setsuko and will be the protagonist of the mentioned fanfiction.  She is the leader and reformer of the Akatsuki, having pulled it back together after its disbandment hundreds of years before the start of the story.  I you didn't draw this from her expression, she is the deceptively sweet type who has a habit of slitting people's throats when their backs are turned (think Road Kamelot from D.Gray-Man except a little more 'round the bush about destruction.)

Also, I am NOT promising that I will continue this story, I just wanted to draw the character.  Also, I know the summary and character profile sounds REALLY corny and slightly Marry-Sue-ish, but please don't judge it before you've read it.  I suck at summaries.

And now, onto the image itself (yeah, yeah, I know.  Long post.)  I am rather pleased with how Setsuko turned out, especially her hands, which, I might add, took forever.  Total time spent:  7 hours.  I'm not exactly sure what the background's about, but I needed to make something, leading to this.  The little balls of light kind of relate to the meaning of the word Akatsuki, which is dawn or day-break.  You know, with the whole light thing. . . .  The green swirlies are just random things I whipped up so as to relate to Setsuko's green and purple color color scheme.

I'm tired, so Peace peoplz!

Quick Eye Study (image)

I'm not sure why I decided to draw this, but this is a quick 20-minute eye study.  NOTE: these eyes are meant to be slightly abstract and unrealistic as they incorporate elements of both realism and manga styles.

I'm especially pleased with the top right (direct eye-view) and the center left (three-quarter, upward-pupil.)  The latter of the two really reminds me of Kyo from  Gift of the Outcast (read it!)  I don't know why. . . Anyway, this image also features my new online KobaltWolf signature!  Woo!  This signature will probably change as time goes on, but I thought I might as well include it.

In other news, I'm almost done with the first draft of Gift of the Outcast Chapter 6 and I'm hoping to get it out by the end of the month.  No promises though!  I'm WAY too busy for my own good.

Peace out peoplz!

Aki and Shou Banner (image)

I decided that mini-me needed some buddies, so. . . .Aki and Shou were born!  YAY!!!!!!!  I really like how Shou's clothes turned out, but I like Aki's expression more.  She's just so KAWAII! (If you're wondering what 'kawaii' means, it means 'cute' in Japanese.)  Shou's expression, however, really reminds me of Hitsugaya from Bleach. I don't know why. . . .

This is my first time for digitally drawing a male face in detail.  I've done it once before, but it was extremely abstract. Though, I'm pretty pleased with how Shou turned out.  His face is one of the more masculine that I've drawn because I normally tend towards a more feminine base.  And if you're wondering, Shou is a fox-boy, hence the badly drawn fox ears.

I'm also very pleased with my cat-girl, Aki.  Her scarf was a lot of fun.  It gave me a chance to play with darks and thin strands of light.  Her clothes were a point of debate for me.  I wasn't sure whether to make them more winter-like, such as what I did with Shou, or whether to make them summery to illustrate the differences between them.  Eventually, I settled on something of both, giving her summer shorts and a sleeveless shirt, but also endowing her with a scarf and mittens.

If you haven't noticed, Aki and Shou have completely different color schemes, Aki being green/blue while Shou is red/orange.  If you've seen my previous work, you'll know that I like to play with color to represent personality.  This image is an example of that.  Aki's warm, bubbly personality is represented by spring green, a color that is associated with rebirth and, well, Spring!  Shou is focused around red for three reasons.  Firstly, he is a fox-boy and foxes are classically red or orange.  Secondly, I needed major contrast in color scheme between him and Aki.  And thirdly, Shou, while cold and reserved, is a fiery character with a short-temper, especially towards his counterpart, Aki.

Before I wrap up this post, I'd like to add, that I may revise their character design.  I've been contemplating the possibility of giving them tails.

Anyway, peace out peoplz!

KobaltWolf Avatar: 02 (image)

Well, here's Mini-Me KobaltWolf again!  This is my official avatar, copyrighted by me, so NO STEALING!!!! I will be using this version in my profile.

It's a quickie and still a little unfinished looking, but I like the rough style.

KobaltWolf Avatar (image)

I was really bored and decided to make myself a little manga avatar.  *NOTE: This image does not in anyway reflect my actual appearance.  I do NOT have wolf ears or blue hair (as cool as that would be....)*

Anyway, I really like how this image turned out, especially the simplistic style and block color its done in.  I debated for a long time on her outfit.  Originally, the jacket was supposed to be tan and the pants blue, but when I put it down on paper (or computer screen in this case), it just didn't work.  So I erased all of that and came up with this!

The background was done by first blending with a soft yellow, and then covering it with a royal blue, creating a sort of blotched, unfocused effect.

So, how do you like mini-me KobaltWolf?  This will be my face from now on.  I will also be creating a version of this for my avatar itself, but I'm to lazy to work on that now.

Peace out peoplz!

Kyo Banner (image)

Since I wasn't especially fond of my other image of Kyo (my OC from the Gift of the Outcast), I thought I'd do something a little more professional. It's still a quickie, but I think it's a lot cooler looking.

The entire image was done in GIMP, though I had to draw it in several different layers. 1) the white background.  2) the main background coloring.  3) the square and line thingies.  And finally 4) Kyo herself.  I especially like Kyo's hair.  It just looks so vivid and contrasting with the rest of the piece.

I also love the background.  The squares were a lot of fun to play with and were done with a special fade-square-patterned brush.

Anyway, I'm tired and I don't really know what else to say.  Happy New Year peoples!

Gift of the Outcast: Kyo Quick Sketch (image)

This is a quick sketch of Kyo, one of the protagonists of my story the Gift of the Outcast.  And a very quick sketch at that I might add.  This was, like my previous image, done with my new touch tablet (I'll be posting more about that later.)

Before we continue, the top she is wearing is a hoodie and the white blob-thingy is the hood.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun doing this image.  The pose was an especially interesting, and difficult, part of the process.  Originally, she was supposed to be in the action of flipping onto her back, but it turned into this weird, slant thing instead.

Another intriguing point was the background.  I wasn't exactly sure what to do for it, so it turned into something of a characterization of her personality.  Firstly, she, like the background, appears very plain and easily discerned as well as almost completely barren.  However, her true being is hidden beneath towers of defense, similar to the life that is hidden beneath the stark sand of the desert depicted.

Secondly, the background is a classic conflict:  Earth vs. Air.  Kyo's personality is also a conflict, though hers is symbolically between fire and ice (will be expanded on.)

Hope you like it!

Peace out peoples,

Gift of the Outcast Banner (image)

So sorry for not having posted in a week!  I've just been super busy with Christmas and stuff and then I got sick on Christmas Eve as an added plus (not).

This is a first-try banner for the Gift of the Outcast.  Now, in my defense, this is an extremely quick sketch that I decided to draw as a way to test out my new touch tablet (it's awesome!)  This image is definitely NOT my best, but it was really fun to do.  I especially like the abstract style.

If you're wondering why Kyo has blue skin and Deidara's is slightly reddish, it's to represent the conflict between their personalities, Kyo being ice and Deidara being fire (this will be expanded upon later in the story.)  I'm not particularly pleased with Deidara's face, so I might go in and edit it later.

And, like all my images, this is copyrighted by ME.  If you want to use it, you have to ask me.  Anyway, Happy Almost New Year!  I'm about three-quarters way through Chapter Four of the Gift of the Outcast so I should get that out soon.

Peace!

Nyx: Empress of the Night (image)

This is a quick little thing I did.  I've been studying Greek mythology as of late and have become fascinated with the wide variety of legends.  Since I have also been wanting to play with contrast, I decided to do a little picture of the Greek personification of the night, Nyx.

This picture is COMPLETELY original in content and copyrighted by me, so no stealing!

I had a lot of fun doing the eyes.  Originally, they were going to be pure black, but after finishing the rest of the image, I decided that if the eyes were going to pop, they needed to have contrast.  I settled on iridescent white, similar to the stars that surround her.  And let me tell you, those stars took forever!

Another area that I would like to point out is her headdress. Like one of my other recent images, Ice Princess,  Nyx: Empress of the Night uses several different brush patterns, two of the most prominent being a fade out circle and a small leopard spot pattern.  I used the circle to make a large, white star in her hair and then overlayed it with black to created an almost eclipsed effect.  The leopard pattern was used to create the rest of the headdress.

Finally, we come to the background, which I think is rather awesome.  I planned it to be abstract, using a dark silver base, but I found that a night sky effect was much more interesting.  I then stretched the stars to fall into her clothing and hair as well.

Anyway, hope you like it!  I would also like to say that I have finished writing and revising the second chapter of The Gift of the Outcast so I should post that soon.  I just have to get through the grueling process of reformatting.

Peace!

Kohaku Character Sketch (image)

I have no idea who this is, but I have dubbed her. . . .Kohaku!  Yes, I like that name.  And no, it is not just a boy's name, it is also a girl's name.  I get told that a lot by people.  In an effort to produce some legitimate reason as to name her Kohaku, I painted her eyes amber and in Japanese, Kohaku means amber.

So anyway, I did this in a much looser style because I was in a rush and consoling myself that it was just a rough sketch.  And, I might add, it is COMPLETELY original.  Yay for originality!

I had the idea for a character like this a few weeks ago, but I never got around to actually drawing her.  So I forced myself to draw her last night.  I started at six and finished at around twelve. Yeah, I was tired, but I am relatively pleased with the result.  Remember, this is only a character sketch, so don't judge me too harshly people!

Like my last image, the Blue Ink Rose, this image was done completely in Inkscape other than for saving it in GIMP format.

Okay, peace out peoples!

Blue Ink Rose (image)

I've been trying to develop a style and in my constant experiment, I came up with this!  It was actually relatively quick, only taking me two hours to complete.  People often ask me who I'm drawing, but I have absolutely no idea who this is, so don't ask.

I wanted to try something more monochrome.  It's not completely monochrome, but the color scheme is definitely more focused around a single color than most of the pictures I paint.

Also, I used Inkscape for the entire image, though I had to save it with GIMP because the internet can't handle SVG files (the file domain Inkscape uses.)  I've found that I much prefer Inkscape to GIMP for lineart, but GIMP is much better for the painting itself as well as blending.  GIMP also has more painting options while Inscape lacks several key aspects, including the smudge tool.  Of course, it could just be that I can't find the smudge tool. . . .

Anyway, peace out peoples!
